Around the world in 50 days
March 29, 2014
Dear Readers,I haven't written a newsletter in a while and that is partly because I am, finally, on track and steadily writing what I hope will become my third novel. I've also been reading a number of good books recently including The Egoist by George Meredith (1879), the Uncle Remus tales by Joel Chandler Harris (I recommend George Heneman's 1981 introduction to brace yourself for the very different racial context), Pieces of Light: The New Science of Memory by Charles Fernyhough, and the recently republished 1965 novel Stoner by John Williams. The last is a brilliant reminder of how an ordinary life is not necessarily a failure, and in any case how life can be so elevated by fine, beautiful writing.
Some of you know also that I was on quite a long trip at the turn of the year, to Australia via Singapore. I 'blogged quite a bit along this adventure at THE DISCREET TRAVELER, starting here:
